I recently wrote about my Mother’s Day fiasco with our air conditioner unit so it got me thinking about what it would cost to replace the unit. Our current AC unit is approaching 10 years and that’s about the time it starts failing or need constant repair of some sort.
In looking for the latest technology and options I came across this video from YouTuber “The DIY HVAC Guy” that has an interesting video entitled, “HVAC is About To Get EXPENSIVE” so I took a look at it.
Essentially, old technology is being phased out and new technology will be required in 2025. The new technology is expected to cost 30% more than current technology. This is driven by an EPA rule change that will phase out R-410A. If you want to read about it from various sources you can click here.
I don’t remember the exact amount I paid for my last AC unit 10 years ago but I think it was about $6000 so if the cost is going up 30% that means a new unit will cost $1800 more. The issue for me is that I have a rental property portfolio so I need to look at replacing those units as well.
Of course, if AC units go up in price then it’s entirely possible and likely that insurance costs will also go up because I’m certain insurance companies are well aware of all the regulatory changes that will impact their payout schedules.
If you’re thinking about replacing your air conditioner and want to save money, this is the year you need to do it before the new regulatory requirements take place. If you would rather have the latest and greatest technology then waiting and paying more might be better for you.
