Do you play video games? I recently started playing video games again. A few years ago I got a PS5 as a gift and I played with it for a while but then hadn’t touched it in years. Recently, I started playing with the PS5 to get my mind off of other things but I realized that gaming has been a large part of helping me learn how to optimize my investment strategy.
No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky is a space video game where you start on a planet with a crashed star ship. You have to go out and gather materials to fix your ship. Eventually, if you play long enough, you build a fleet of ships, freighters, and bases throughout the galaxy. The reason I liked playing this game are for two reasons, the discovery aspect and the economy aspect.
Elite Dangerous
Similar to No Man’s Sky, it’s a game about discovery and running businesses either ferrying passengers, mining asteroids or hunting pirates. Once again, the appeal here is to build an economic empire.
Civilization IV, V, VI
Civilization is a strategy game where you start from a primitive standpoint and progress to a “civilized” society though investment in science, technology, culture and diplomacy. There is an economy and trading to optimize the growth of your empire.
Skyrim
A role playing game where you explore the world of Skyrim and fight your way through dragons, giants and giant spiders. The exploration and economy building structures and crafting weapons, potions, armor and other valuable products.
Strategy & Profiting
There are other games I’ve played but my favorite ones tend to be the ones that have the two core concepts of discovery & progressive evolution and some type of economic system to build wealth.
My favorite board games also have these types of concepts although “discovery” is often lacking in board games.
I wonder if years of video game playing have secretly and subtly imbued me with insights into optimizing my investment portfolio.
